Handgun
Training Page
Our
mission is to provide people of good character the information and training
needed to be safe and effective in using a handgun. This training is based on the Modern
Technique of the Pistol as described by Jeff Cooper (founder of
The
knowledge and skills associated with operating firearms can be broken into four
levels. We should continually strive to
achieve (and maintain) Skill Level 4:
|
Four Skill Levels of Firearm Operation |
||
|
1 |
Unconscious/Incompetent |
Level 1 is
unaware and uneducated; you simply don’t know what you don’t know. TV and the movies are your main influence
on gun handling and you are quite possibly a danger to yourself and others. |
|
2 |
Conscious/Incompetent |
Level 2 is
aware but untrained; this where you become aware of the proper techniques to
gun handling but, you haven’t been trained to perform them. This is the level an untrained person will
find themselves at the conclusion of the Safe Gun Handling Lecture, where the
4-rules are explained in detail but haven’t been practiced. |
|
3 |
Conscious/Competent |
Level 3 is
aware and trained to a point; you understand the proper techniques and can
perform them but, you have to think through each process. You know the 4-rules but have to remind
yourself to keep your finger off the trigger when the handgun is not indexed
on target. This is the level you will
be after taking Basic Handgun 1. |
|
4 |
Unconscious/Competent |
Level 4 is
proficient; you ‘own’ the skills at this level and no longer have to think
about performing them, as they are automatic.
The acts of safe gun handling are so ingrained that any violation of
the 4-rules feels alien. You can no
longer be shown a gun at a gun store or show without checking its condition
and keeping the muzzle depressed until you can align the sights without
covering any standers-by. You don’t
remember keeping your finger straight during a reload, but it is,,, every
time. |
The
progression of handgun skill is analogous to learning to drive. Since I’m currently in the process of teaching
my two teenage daughters to do just that, the similarities have become quite
apparent (by the way, they already shoot very well). For those who have driven a while (and drive
well), you no longer have to remind yourself to check the mirrors every minute
or so, or glance over your shoulder before signaling to make a lane
change. These actions are so ingrained
that we hardly realize we do them. We
want to learn to operate our firearm in the same manner, so if we are ever
called upon to employ it, the actions of presenting it will be reflective and
not require focused thought.
The
courses listed below are designed to help one progress efficiently through the
4 skill levels and achieve Unconscious/Competence. Handgun Familiarization is a class that a
complete novice can take with confidence and be introduced to the Modern
Technique of the Pistol, the 4-Rules and multiple handgun platforms in a safe,
fun environment. The students will
quickly move from Skill Level 1 to Skill Level 3 after this class.
The
Basic Handgun Handling and Marksmanship classes are organized in a manner to
steadily build the student’s skill set and increase demands and pressure as
they demonstrate capability. These
courses are structured to progress the students from Skill Level 2 to 3 and
ultimately Skill Level 4.
The
other courses are more advanced and are reserved for students who have
demonstrated Skill Level 4.

is the menu of courses. Class
configuration is flexible and can be tailored to specific requests. Click on each for a detailed course
